It rhymes by sound, syllable by syllable.
Every word is broken into its sounds with IPA, the phonetic alphabet linguists use to write down speech. Then words are grouped by the vowel you hear in each syllable, because that is what carries a rhyme when it’s sung. “Midnight” is [ih] + [eye], so you get insight, hindsight and “in the nick of time”.

At Berklee College of Music, songwriters learn to judge a rhyme by its vowel sounds and stresses, and to pick between perfect, family, additive, assonance and consonance rhymes. sngwrtr is built the same way, so the closest rhymes come first and the looser ones follow.
